Conductive Education is a developmental method to teach everyday life skills to children and adults with motor disabilities. It teaches the participants in the program how they can use and improve their skills to achieve their maximum abilities and take an active part in life. It is a lifestyle. Conductive Education covers all aspects of human development—physical, cognitive, communication, and language, social and emotional. It is based on motivation.

Students exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics are not candidates for Conductive Education Programming:
  • Sensory impairments that inhibit an individual from attending to the visual and/or auditory prompts being provided throughout the program
  • Maladaptive or extreme behaviors of a nature that are disruptive to the group process
  • Moderate to severe Sensory Integration challenges that minimize individual participation in the group process, or that are disruptive to the overall cohesion of the group
  • Health issues that prohibit ability to participate in the group process, prolonged physical activity or that are of a medical nature that require continuous equipment management and/or status monitoring
  • Cognition deficits of the degree that minimize or eliminate an individual’s capacity to initiate any active participation in the process
  • Irreversible physical deformities, including some progressive and degenerative disorders
Exceptions to this guideline may occur in certain instances based on Conductor recommendations. In these cases, an annual reevaluation will be conducted to determine continued appropriateness of placement in the conductive education program.

  • Lying
  • Rolling
  • Sitting
  • Standing

  • Self-care (including eating, dressing, etc.)
