April Blog - More Than a Book: The Impact of Reading

Updated: Apr 14

CECO is excited to welcome the Scholastic Book Fair from April 13 through April 21, with the Little Blue Truck arriving on April 15! For many students, book fairs are more than just a chance to pick out a new book. They are an experience that sparks curiosity, excitement, and a lifelong love of reading.

Each year, Scholastic Book Fairs give children the opportunity to explore stories that align with their interests and choose books for themselves. In fact, when children pick out their own books, they are more likely to finish and enjoy reading them!

At CECO, we know that reading looks different for every child, and that is what makes it so powerful. Reading is not just about turning pages; it is about connection, communication, and discovery. For some of our students and participants, reading may look like listening to a story, exploring pictures, using a communication device, or engaging with books in a sensory way. Every interaction with a book builds language, understanding, and confidence.

Books also create opportunities for connection between families and children. Studies show that reading together opens the door for conversation and strengthens relationships. Whether it is a parent reading aloud at bedtime, a teacher sharing a story in class, or a student independently exploring a favorite book, these moments matter.

Just last month, during Read Across America Week (celebrated each year around March 2), we saw this impact firsthand at CECO. Parents visited classrooms to read with students, creating special moments of connection and joy. We also had the opportunity to have Kolby, our Adult Program President, visit classrooms and read to students, sharing encouragement and leadership. These experiences are a reminder that reading is for everyone.

For individuals with neurological motor disabilities, books can support communication, build cognitive skills, and encourage independence. They introduce new ideas, strengthen focus, and allow students and participants to engage with the world around them in meaningful ways. Reading can also be motivating. A favorite story or character can inspire movement, participation, and interaction in ways that feel natural and exciting.

That is why events like the Book Fair are so important. They allow every student to explore, choose, and experience the joy of books in their own way. It is not just about buying a book. It is about discovering something that sparks interest, imagination, and growth.

At CECO, we believe that every student and participant deserves access to tools that support their development and independence. We encourage families to take time this month to read together, whether it is a favorite book or a new one. Sharing a book with a loved one creates a lasting impact.

Because every book tells a story and every student builds one!
